Allt-A-Bhaine often produces incredibly sweet malts no matter what cask they are aged in. Anyone who is not afraid of great sweetness and lots of fruit is well served with this - albeit rather rare - malt.
Allt A'Bhainne, pronounced 'oltawejin', means 'milk stream' in Gaelic. The distillery was built in 1975 by Chivas Brothers, then a Seagram subsidiary, and was the second distillery in then-owner Seagram's "Five Distilleries in 5 Years" program. The project was discontinued with the oil crisis and because it was unaffordable. The buildings on the B 9009, 8 miles south-west of Dufftown, have been sensitively integrated into the landscape and, after completion, conform to the most modern standards.
In 1989, the capacity was doubled by installing two more stills, which increased the capacity to 2.6 million liters. Since then, the distillery has been state-of-the-art like hardly any other distillery.
With the Seagram deal, the distillery went to Pernod Ricard on December 19, 2001, which they shut down in 2002, even though the distillery is one of the most efficient around. It can be operated by a single person, also because the filling into casks and subsequent storage does not take place on site. On May 27, 2005 the distillery was put back into operation, but there is still no owner bottling from this distillery.
